I have just reread this beautiful story. It is so good on so many levels. The 11 words that make up the last paragraph are simply brilliant. I wish I had written them.

a beautifully written story that had me thinking about the darning egg passed to me by my

old, handicapped by a stroke, mother-in-law. It had seen many a sock by the look of the

ruts in the wooden knob .. and it darned many a sock once it was in my possession. I still have

it tucked away... no socks to darn now.

Such a beautiful story that had me thinking about my own darning egg, inherited from my mum...still smooth and silken. What joy.

I love the memories small things evoke and the stories that go with them. It’s wonderful to have small keepsakes from the people we love and lives they lived. One small item often carries so many many memories. Treasure them.

Irene, this is a beautiful tribute to your Granmarie who persevered with grace in spite of so many challenges. You paint a clear picture of that sewing nook below the stairs, which offered you a memorable treasure, that well-worn darning egg.

I felt Granmarie's shame, pain, and triumph through your beautiful description. Thank you.

Love how this begins in the nook and takes us on a journey - glad you kept that darning egg.
