It’s so hard to downsize….anything, anywhere. So much stuff has meaning…..dishes especially for me. Good luck with that. I think it is challenging when the things which hold such memories for us don’t mean the same thing to others.
Good luck with clearing out your second home. I sympathise with you, since I am moving and downsizing, so trying to reduce my possessions. When getting rid of things becomes a real task, it is interesting to see what we want to keep - or let go. Like you, I feel it is important to “use the good dishes”. Congratulations on three years on Substack.
Downsizing is a challenging endeavor. I rely on a small book to encourage me called The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning. I’ve been working on the process for quite some time having some success. Ultimately I think it also represents a certain state of mind.
I appreciate the downsizing. We did it and decided it was an opportunity to really really really test what matters - things like plates and books. Thus far (9 years later), I regret nothing. The things we kept were the things that spoke to us.
I love your porcelain - such a perfect thing to keep.
Do have R and R when you can and I look forward to hearing how the move goes...
I love your “use the good dishes” philosophy. Having recently moved into a house (at least for part of the time) I now have my mum's dinner set which sat unused in a cupboard for 60+ years. It feels important to actually.use.it — even on a weekday! Enjoy (parts of) your two-week break!
Thank you Alice. I also have an everything goes in the dishwasher philosophy. How do you feel about that? I figure the little gold line around the good dishes will outlast me even if I put the in the dishwasher!
Ha! I like that! Although I don't have a dishwasher—as such 🤲. It's easy, isn't it, to think we must preserve things but then there is something sad about not giving items LIFE.☀️
During the pandemic, we started setting a nicer table at dinner, using the best dishes and glassware and working as well as buying some nice new everyday dishes and glassware. It felt like a refuge from the tensions and fear outside. We even used wedding and other presents that were always just for special occasions and holidays.
Hi Alice, I have an article for your to consider. What is the best email address? Many thanks, David
Hi David please send it to agoldbloom@videotron.ca

Could you provide a word count for a submitted article?
David 750-1000 words is ideal. Hope you submit something!
Ah! This is a monumental move! If you care to write about it more, I’d love to post it on Finding Home. All the best to you, Alice! 🧡🏡
Thanks Jan. I am looking forward to having less responsibilities.
