I was drawn to this wonderful piece. Thank you. Like Alice, I also had a strong Goldbloom mother-in-law, who enriched my life well beyond producing the man whom I love.

Nancy:

Dorothy Lipovenko here.

Permit me to recommend a stellar collection of columns by a rotating group of women that appeared Thursdays for many years (back in the day when we were younger) in the New York Times. It was called HERS, and I believe the anthology-- HERS: Through Women's Eyes (edited by Nancy Newhouse) -- is available at Amazon.ca

I reread them every so often the way one would revisit a favorite painting: just to admire their artistry. If you know what a 'pushke lady' is, you will love the column by Faye Moskowitz.

If you want to know how Carl Reiner's secretary broke into a male stronghold of sitcom writing, you will have a rollicking good time with Sybil Adelman's column.

And thank you, Nancy, for your nice comment about the 'mother-in-law I never knew' piece that ran in May at Considerable Age.

To all of you mothers who ensure that our children can meet the challenges that are unique to their generation and the ones that are just part of living. This is the best and the hardest job. I thank you so much for your memories and gratitude, Dorothy.

I loved my mother in law and she loved me. In her eyes I could do no wrong. But she was wrong about that.
