You might want to listen while in a cozy bubble bath cocooned away from the chaos - all the while content that no one will come to your home to take it away from you - or take you away for protesting issues of social justice...how could that ever happen here?
For the love of heaven everyone: can you just step back from the chaos for two hours and go see at a movie theatre near you "Becoming Led Zeppelin."
Even if you're not a Zepp fan, hop aboard the documentary's archival footage and be transported back in time to a decade so many of us on this website had the great, good fortune in which to grow up.
Even if, like me, you were too young at the time to make a difference, you will recognize from music of the 1960s its outsized role in who you are and what has happened to you, by choice or by circumstance.
The best medicine for the world right now? A giant rock concert.
Thanks for sharing your burning outrage and powerful images of wilful destruction. Yes, don't obey in advance is an important message -- too many politicians rush towards appeasement, as if that ever helped stave off evil. A memorable piece.
Thanks, Sari. Obeying in advance is so pervasive that I'm feeling more inclined to over-the-top rage which probably isn't good for me. We are all looking for the sweet spot.
Age is no barrier to defiance, as 83-year-old Senator Bernie Sanders proves in his recent call for young Americans to fight hard against Trump and the oligarchs.
I'm totally with you on the need to act - I find myself wishing for clearer leadership to emerge that we could unite behind, and for a movement similar to a United Front Against Fascism, like in the 1930s-40s, to coalesce around. As for details on the "inform against each other" edict, I read that the authoritarians were installing a hotline at the federal agencies so that workers could call in about any co-worker or manager who dared support any kind of "DEI" effort or who was defying the ban against it. The push to eliminate the civil rights and antiracist progress of the past 60 years is absolute.
Yes and so painful. Did you see the list of terms that have been erased from all Federal websites? They constitute a significant part of common speech about public life.
Please be as Canadian as you possibly can. Same for Mexico. Not all of us Americans are as full of hubris as the guy who occupies our White House. How he managed to bamboozle us a second time is a source of tremendous shame. If we could call early elections I would be the first to suggest it.
I wish everyone had been more defiant when your Biden administration, and our little tyrant up here in Canada, mandated vaccines. But where did it get those who were not compliant? Calling those who didn’t want a rushed, novel product injected into their bodies misogynistic racists, taking away their freedom to board a plane or train, to dine in a restaurant, attend college, retain their jobs, essentially making them the marked ones. Talk about dividing a country. Pitting not only neighbour against neighbour, friend against friend, but most tragically family against family. All this while knowing, very early on thanks to Israel, that the vaccine’s ability to protect against infection was very short lived. They knew. THEY KNEW. The one thing I learned during the pandemic is that all politicians are self serving tyrants. The dementia riddled one, the orange man, the drama teacher. And yes, it is up to us to be defiant. I just wish I had more faith that, in the end, it would make one bit of difference.
Actually the overwhelming majority of Canadians volunteered to don masks and take vaccinations - not only for their own health but to protect the health of others - it brought us together - it's a social responsibility thing that we kinda believe in up here in the frozen north...just sayin'
Need I remind you that everything was mandated? Sorry to break it to you, but there was no option but to “volunteer”. You are being willfully ignorant of the damage and, as Susie pointed out, polarization, it caused in our country. Just sayin’
I don't share your views regarding the vaccine but I think you have a worthwhile point regarding the weaponization of it and the polarization that followed.
Susie Kaufman: I was born early in the year when Thomas E. Dewey (a good Republican -- for civil rights; for international institutions) had crushed the isolationist, Robert Taft, and, according to the Chicago Tribune, the day after the election, "DEWEY BEATS TRUMAN" -- with the President, Harry S Truman, proudly sporting the newspaper, grinning ear to ear.
My childhood household was R-I-G-H-T W-I-N-G !!
So, in '58 and forward, at ripe ten and older comprehending years, I watched John Birch Society movies showing HUAC (House Un-American Activities Committee) hearings, with Mom and Dad cursing at actors and others who, in response to hateful, rhetorical questions shouted by right-wing-extremist Congressman, RESPONDED:
"Sir, respectfully and regrettably, it is my duty to tell you, that, upon advice of counsel, I decline to answer that question on the grounds of my rights against self-incrimination under the United States Constitution."
This same line would be repeated, word for labored-word, in response to the next 20 infuriating questions by the right-wing-NUT elected by "We the People" to the United States Congress in 1946, 1948 . . .
To each response, as shown in the John Birch Society series of films, my Mom, my Dad would be furious that an actor, a civil rights activist, dressed faultlessly in a well-tailored suit, would calmly recite the litany.
"Oh, cannot anything be done about these COMMUNISTS?!"
As you say, "We cannot go back there."
Oh, wait a minute. Our system of popular and electoral votes as set up in the amended U.S. Constitution HAS elevated right-wing-WHITE-NATIONALIST-racists to the top.
We ARE being sent back there.
But I am not 10.
I am 77.
With YOU, I will resist.
I will be seen.
I will be heard.
I am not going away.
My spiritual life with the great philosophers (Plato, Aristotle, Plotinus, David Hume, Immanuel Kant, Hegel) will build my soul in strength FOR RESISTANCE.
My cultural life -- Beethoven to Shostakovich -- will feed inner integrity to love my neighbor, the immigrant -- who are WE to deem her "ILLEGAL" -- which person, created with dignity by Mother Nature, does not have the FULL HUMANITY to render "illegal" an IRRELEVANT SLUR!
We will protect the persecuted.
In our resistance, as a proud Navy man, I will join with those who take the words of Admiral David Glasgow Farragut, "Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!"
Susie, I am glad you will continue to be defiant. We Canadians are going to be defiant too. And we know there are many Americans who will join you in that defiance and it will make a difference.
I love all of your descriptions, making every scene so vivid. Yes, I so agree with you: it's so important to love thy neighbour. But, I can't stop myself from making one or two exceptions.
Rock on! Rock on Zepp heads!
You might want to listen while in a cozy bubble bath cocooned away from the chaos - all the while content that no one will come to your home to take it away from you - or take you away for protesting issues of social justice...how could that ever happen here?
Would that my adopted country Canada could deal with looming economic destruction by going to a rock concert!

Bernie's devotion is unparalleled.

Canadians set the standard.

An example we Americans could learn a great deal from.

Thank you for your passion. I truly believe that those in our generation know what is at stake and will be on the front lines.
Susie, I am glad you will continue to be defiant. We Canadians are going to be defiant too. And we know there are many Americans who will join you in that defiance and it will make a difference.
I have never felt closer to my Canadian neighbors. Thank you.
Tell the world sista!
...and you tell it so well...Brava!
Much appreciated, Robert. Each of us has a particular gift. If I can write out the next decade (that would be a blessing!), I will do that gladly.
Susie, please watch and share this defiant's 75-year-old French Senator's 8-minute speech.
It's brilliant, wise and no-bullshit-powerful.
Love all, and tell the truth.

Yes! Refuse to be compliant!
Start young and exercise that capacity regularly.

I am not an absolutist about love.
You are what we need Beth. I’ll admit I just did something cheesy. I Googled quotes on defiance. Here’s one by Will Durst that may https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/will_durst_177973?src=t_defiance
